Description:

Purpose of the Role

The Laser Welding & Ultrasonic Welding SME supports the Global Manufacturing Engineering team development, industrialization, and continuous optimization of advanced joining processes—covering laser and ultrasonic welding—for cell manufacturing. This role ensures that all welded and bonded connections achieve the required mechanical, electrical, and safety performance through robust parameter definition, rigorous validation, and disciplined process control. The SME supports weld quality and yield improvements by establishing process windows, leading trials and DOE, correlating weld parameters with NDT and destructive test data, and partnering closely with equipment, quality, maintenance, and production teams. The role is central to achieving stable, hightakt, highreliability production by defining CTQs, supporting equipment commissioning, and enabling safe, repeatable, and highprecision joining across the full battery assembly value stream.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Support process development, industrialization, and optimization of laser welding processes for cell cans, tabs, busbars, and current collectors, including parameter windows, weld schedules, and standard work.

  • Support specifying, validating, and optimizing ultrasonic welding processes for electrode tab welding, busbar connections, and foil joins, including tool design, horn/anvil selection, and stack maintenance.

  • Participate and influence PFMEA, control plans, and process capability studies (Cp/Cpk) for all welding operations; review and/or define critical-to-quality (CTQ) features and acceptance criteria.

  • Lead trials, DOE, and correlation studies between weld parameters, NDT results (vision, X-ray/CT), and destructive testing.

Knowledge Generic

  • Strong background in laser welding (eg., Trumpf, IPG) and ultrasonic welding for metals, preferably in batteries, automotive, or electronics.

  • Experience with weld quality assessment (macro etch, cross-section, pull/shear testing) and NDT integration (vision/X-ray).

  • Familiarity with joining of Cu, Al, Ni, and coated foils; understanding of metallurgy and heat-affected zones in thin materials.
