Description:

Purpose of the Role

As a Cell Safety and Compliance Engineer, you will be responsible for the planning, execution, and analysis of safety validation and certification programs for lithium-ion cells. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders—including Design, Test & Operations, CAE, and FMEA teams—you’ll embed safety into the heart of product development.

You will lead abuse testing (thermal, electrical, and mechanical), interpret results, influence design decisions, and ensure compliance with international standards such as UN and UL. This role requires a hands-on approach, strong analytical capability, and a proactive mindset to ensure product safety throughout the development lifecycle.

The position is based in Coventry with a hybrid working arrangement.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Lead the design and execution of cell safety and certification testing programs (e.g. thermal runaway, nail penetration, overcharge).

  • Ensure compliance with global safety and certification standards (e.g. UN38.3, UL1642).

  • Analyse safety test data and provide clear, data-driven recommendations to the design and validation teams.

  • Prepare technical documentation to support internal reviews and external certification processes.

  • Support structured root cause analysis (e.g. 8D, Six Sigma) of safety incidents or failures.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with CAE, Design, FMEA, and Pack teams to embed safety requirements early in development.

  • Stay up to date with international safety and certification standards relevant to lithium-ion batteries.

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal safety validation processes.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers in safety testing and compliance topics.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.

  • Industry or academic experience in battery technology or safety validation.

  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion cell behaviour, failure modes, and safety risks.

  • Hands-on experience in safety and abuse testing of large-format lithium-ion cells.

  • Familiarity with relevant safety and certification standards (e.g. UN, UL).

  • Proven ability to analyse test data and provide technical insights.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across disciplines.

Desirable:

  • Experience with failure analysis techniques (e.g. CT, X-ray, thermal imaging).

  • Knowledge of DFMEA and risk assessment methodologies.

  • Experience preparing documentation for regulatory approval or certification bodies.
