Join Our Mission to Power the Future
Are you passionate about safety, innovation, and energy storage technologies? Do you have what it takes to ensure lithium-ion cells meet the highest standards in safety, compliance, and performance?
We are seeking a Senior Cell Safety and Compliance Engineer to join our Cell Product Ownership & Validation Team in Coventry. In this critical role, you’ll be at the forefront of developing next-generation energy storage solutions—ensuring they are not only powerful but also safe and certified to meet global standards.
About the Role
As a Senior Cell Safety and Compliance Engineer, you will be responsible for the planning, execution, and analysis of safety validation and certification programs for lithium-ion cells. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders—including Design, Test & Operations, CAE, and FMEA teams—you’ll embed safety into the heart of product development.
You will lead abuse testing (thermal, electrical, and mechanical), interpret results, influence design decisions, and ensure compliance with international standards such as UN and UL. This role requires a hands-on approach, strong analytical capability, and a proactive mindset to ensure product safety throughout the development lifecycle.
Key Responsibility Areas
-
Lead the design and execution of cell safety and certification testing programs (e.g. thermal runaway, nail penetration, overcharge).
-
Ensure compliance with global safety and certification standards (e.g. UN38.3, UL1642).
-
Analyse safety test data and provide clear, data-driven recommendations to the design and validation teams.
-
Prepare technical documentation to support internal reviews and external certification processes.
-
Support structured root cause analysis (e.g. 8D, Six Sigma) of safety incidents or failures.
-
Collaborate cross-functionally with CAE, Design, FMEA, and Pack teams to embed safety requirements early in development.
-
Stay up to date with international safety and certification standards relevant to lithium-ion batteries.
-
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal safety validation processes.
-
Mentor and support junior engineers in safety testing and compliance topics.

-
Proven ability to analyse test data and provide technical insights.
-
Strong communication and collaboration skills across disciplines.
Desirable:
-
Experience with failure analysis techniques (e.g. CT, X-ray, thermal imaging).
