Description:

Who we are…

Agratas is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. We design, develop and manufacture high-quality, high-performance, sustainable batteries for the mobility and energy sectors.

We are a scale-up business with a start-up mentality and the backing of a well-established parent company. The UK business headquarters is in the Midlands and we are currently building a battery manufacturing facility in Somerset and looking to compliment, scale and grow our R&D facilities in Abingdon and Coventry with the brightest minds from within the battery and EV sector.

Our battery technology roadmap is based on a foundation of world-class solutions for multiple applications. Collaborating with our technical partners, we are industrialising best-in-class high energy density and long-lasting battery cells. We are also committed to developing the next generation of battery technologies.

Purpose of the Role

As a Product Excellence Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring robust, high-quality cell design through the development, and application of Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA). This role provides deep technical product expertise to support cell design activities, identify, and mitigate risk, and ensure alignment with customer, regulatory, and internal quality requirements.

Working closely with the Cell Design, Pack Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality teams, the role focuses on applying structured risk analysis, understanding failure modes and degradation mechanisms, and supporting product concerns through disciplined problem-solving approaches. This position requires strong experience of lithium-ion cell design and performance.

This is a hybrid working role that will be based in our Coventry office.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Lead and develop DFMEAs in accordance with AIAG V5 methodology, ensuring technical robustness and traceability.
  • Provide technical excellence and risk ownership for cell design, from concept through development and validation.
  • Interface closely with cell design team to identify, assess, and mitigate design risks, including failure modes and degradation mechanisms.
  • Support product concerns, technical issues, and structured problem-solving activities (e.g., 8D, root cause analysis).
  • Ensure alignment between DFMEA and Design Validation Plans, from commodity-level to product-level testing.
  • Support cross-functional reviews with Manufacturing Engineering, Plant Quality, Supplier Quality  and Pack Engineering to ensure design intent.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of product excellence processes, standards, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant ISO standards, quality systems, and internal requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience within a Tier 1 cell manufacturer or equivalent advanced battery development environment.
  • Strong technical understanding of lithium-ion cell design, architecture, materials, and performance, with a solid understanding of material characterisation methods.
  • Extensive experience developing and maintaining DFMEAs using AIAG V5 methodology.
  • Deep understanding of failure modes, degradation mechanisms, and reliability risks in electrochemical systems.
  • Experience supporting product concerns, lessons learned and structured problem-solving (8D, Ishikawa, 5Why).
  • Knowledge of ISO standards, quality management systems, and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to influence technical discussions.
  • High attention to detail, strong analytical capability, and structured thinking mindset.

Desired

  • PhD related to lithium-ion batteries.
  • Proficient in working with APIS IQ Software.
  • Experience with PLM systems.
