Purpose of the Role
Join Agratas – Where Innovation Meets Impact
Job Title: Characterisation Scientist (X-ray Technique Specialist) – Li-ion Battery Cell (Advanced Characterisation)
Location: Oxford, UK
The Opportunity
At Agratas, a Tata Group enterprise, we are developing world-leading lithium-ion battery technologies to power the transition to a net-zero future. As a Characterisation Scientist (X-ray Technique Specialist), you will play a critical role in unlocking material and component insights through advanced X-ray analysis—including XRD, XRF, and tomography.
This hands-on role is central to our R&D efforts in Oxford, supporting the development and validation of high-performance, next-generation battery materials. You'll work with state-of-the-art tools, collaborate with internal experts and external partners, and help evolve Agratas' in-house analytical capabilities.
If you’re driven by technical depth, data accuracy, and real-world impact, this is your opportunity to help shape the energy storage technologies of tomorrow.
Key Responsibility Areas
-
X-ray Characterisation
Lead the application of X-ray diffraction (XRD) to analyse Li-ion active materials and electrodes. Support additional characterisation through XRF and X-ray tomography on components and small prototype cells. -
Sample Preparation & Analysis
Prepare solid and liquid samples for X-ray analysis. Conduct experiments, process data (e.g. using Highscore, GSAS), and generate actionable insights for R&D teams. -
Lab Operations & Equipment
Maintain and calibrate X-ray instruments. Ensure compliance with safety protocols, assist with Radiation Protection procedures, and support laboratory best practices. -
Collaboration & Insight Delivery
Work closely with electrochemists, scientists, and engineers to deliver meaningful interpretations that accelerate materials development. Build links with external partners and university facilities to access novel techniques. -
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate experiment records, support method development, and contribute to internal knowledge sharing across R&D.
Job Context

-
Experience with XRF and sample preparation techniques.
-
Excellent attention to detail, experimental rigour, and documentation practices.
-
Strong communication and teamwork skills for working across technical disciplines.
Desirable Skills
-
Familiarity with X-ray tomography, in-situ cell analysis, or small-cell characterisation.
-
Experience with XAS and synchrotron techniques is a plus.
-
Background working with external research facilities or universities for advanced characterisation access.
Qualifications
-
Degree (and ideally PhD) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or related discipline.
-
Relevant experience applying X-ray techniques to battery materials or electrochemical systems.
