Purpose of the Role

We are looking for a Facilities Maintenance Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a highly technical R&D facility. Working closely with engineers and scientists, you will take responsibility for day-to-day maintenance activities across the building, utilities and specialist infrastructure, helping to ensure minimal downtime and a well‑run facility.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys problem solving, takes ownership, and is comfortable working in a fast‑paced technical environment.

 

The role is located in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and requires full on‑site presence.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across building services and facility infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and repair faults, completing small mechanical, electrical and plumbing works in-house and coordinating external contractors for larger tasks.
  • Manage contractors on site, including RAMS review, permit-to-work and supervision of works.
  • Support the maintenance and uptime of HVAC systems and specialist environments (e.g. laboratories, controlled areas).
  • Maintain site spares, tools and workshops, ensuring critical parts are available when needed.
  • Support statutory inspections, compliance checks and general facilities housekeeping.
  • Work closely with R&D teams to plan maintenance activities with minimal disruption
  • Support other Facilities, R&D and admin staff around general administration, procurement, goods in/out, utilities, coordination and compliance activities

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven hands-on experience in a facilities or maintenance engineering role.
  • Ability to undertake basic electrical and mechanical fault finding and repairs.
  • Experience managing contractors and understanding safe systems of work (RAMS, PTW, CDM).
  • Experience working in a laboratory, R&D or high‑tech manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, building management systems (BMS) or specialist facility infrastructure.
  • Relevant technical qualifications or trade background.

 

Role Specific Qualifications/Certifications

This role is ideal for a candidate experienced in facilities maintenance and operation excited by the prospect of working in a highly technical environment alongside skilled scientific professionals. The successful candidate will be comfortable hands-on with HVAC equipment and facility systems, and possess a can-do attitude to keep the facility running.
