Purpose of the Role
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is a hands-on senior technical authority within the Mechanical Design Team, accountable for the technical coherence, integration, requirements integrity and design quality of EV battery module and pack solutions. The role bridges Systems Engineering, Mechanical Design, CAE, Test, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality and programme delivery, converting system intent into clear mechanical requirements and robust, manufacturable concepts.
The role owns the mechanical integration framework from requirements analysis and architecture through detailed design, release, build support and verification, aligned with Mechanical SPICE activities MEE.1 to MEE.5. The successful candidate combines practical CAD and packaging capability with disciplined requirements management, design governance, issue resolution and outstanding attention to detail.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Own mechanical integration and requirements activities ensuring system requirements are analysed, decomposed, allocated and translated into clear, testable mechanical requirements, interfaces, constraints and acceptance criteria.
- Own mechanical requirements baselines, bidirectional traceability and the mechanical compliance matrix from source requirement through design implementation and verification evidence, using the approved ALM and PLM toolsets.
- Actively contribute to concept designs, packaging studies and architecture trade-offs, balancing performance, safety, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, mass, cost, timing and regulatory compliance.
- Create and maintain preliminary and detailed concept designs, including cell arrangement, structural load paths, thermal interfaces, joining and fixation concepts, sealing, venting, electrical clearances, tolerance strategy and interfaces.
- Plan, chair and close design reviews and integration reviews, ensuring decisions, assumptions, actions, risks, requirement deviations and interface issues are recorded, assigned and resolved with objective evidence.
- Perform digital mock-up (DMU) reviews and CAD quality governance, including but not limited to BOM, model structure, naming, interfaces, clash and clearance checks, drawing quality, GD&T, design release readiness and adherence to CAD/PLM standards.
- Support DFMEA activities and ensure prevention and detection actions are linked to requirements, design controls, special characteristics, verification plans and issue resolution.
- Support the design team with benchmarking activities of competitor products; convert findings into quantified design targets, concept opportunities, standards and lessons learned.
- Support the development of mechanical design rules, design standards and design guidelines covering recurring module and pack design topics; ensure lessons learned and validated best practice are embedded into future programmes.
- Lead and/or execute design release activities, ensuring released data are complete, compliant, traceable, manufacturable and consistent across requirements.
- Work closely with CAE and Test teams to define analysis and verification needs, interpret results and implement design improvements for structural, vibration, durability, thermal, sealing and abuse-load performance.
- Support prototype builds, resolving integration and assembly issues and feeding verified lessons back into requirements, standards, design rules and released definition.
- Communicate complex technical information clearly and concisely to engineering, programme and senior stakeholders, escalating risks and decisions early with robust options and recommendations.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Degree (BEng, MEng, MSc or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Proven product-development experience, with substantial hands-on responsibility for mechanical requirements, design, integration and delivery of complex systems.
- Relevant experience with EV battery systems.
- Proven capability in requirements analysis, decomposition, traceability and verification, including the creation and maintenance of compliance matrices and evidence.
- Proven experience in HV battery concept development, packaging, structural integration, thermal and sealing interfaces, joining, venting, serviceability and manufacturing constraints.
- Advanced 2D/3D CAD, DMU and design review capability, preferably with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, with strong understanding of CAD quality, model governance, 2D drawings, GD&T and design release.
- Demonstrated experience of tolerance stack-up analysis, DFMEA, structured problem solving and management of design and integration risks.
- Good understanding of CAE and physical verification for structural, vibration, fatigue, thermal, sealing and durability performance, with the ability to translate findings into design action.
- Good understanding of delivering within NPI gateway and APQP frameworks using a systems engineering approach aligned with ISO 15288, IATF 16949, ISO 9001 and Mechanical SPICE.
- Awareness of applicable battery and automotive safety and regulatory requirements, including ISO 26262 and relevant UN, ISO, IEC, UL and AIS requirements.
- High Voltage safety training or willingness to obtain the level required for the role.
- Excellent communicator who can build alignment across geographically distributed teams and stakeholders while providing clear technical challenge.
- Outstanding attention to detail, disciplined follow-through and the judgement to distinguish critical integration risks from lower-priority concerns.
- Self-directed and resilient, able to work in a start-up environment with limited supervision while remaining strongly collaborative and accountable for delivery.
